This is a fabulous soup tureen with lid and ladle made in Japan and imported by Fred Roberts Co. of San Francisco. This tureen is in the Summer Flame Poppy pattern featuring orange, white, and yellow poppies against a mustard yellow background. This is majolica in the wildest sense of it with the raised flowers standing out against the background and a thick shiny glaze. Majolica often does not age well–it is fragile and crazes easily. I will detail the blemishes below but regardless of those issues, this is a visually striking piece that just screams early 1970’s. It is vibrant in color and brightens up everything around it, which is great for me on this gloomy Seattle day! First of all: Measurements– Ladle: about 8″ depending on how you measure Lid: 6 3/4″ diameter, 3 1/4″ ish tall Tureen w/o lid: 10″ handle to handle, 7 1/2″ shorter diameter, 5″ tall Tureen with lid: About 8″ tall–hard to get exact dimensions Condition: Ladle: One small ding on rim as shown. White spot on back from kiln firing. I sell a lot of ceramic ladles and this is common and due to process of making it so I do not consider it a defect. Lid: Two chips on inner rim not visible when lid is in place–as seen in photos. If there is any crazing, it is very minor. I do not see any at the moment but I can’t believe there wouldn’t be SOME crazing so I am leaving that open. Whatever is there is very subtle and needs more than my glasses to be apparent. Missing green on end of handle–not chips just missing color. A few rough spots on the edges of the raised flowers but very minor and not eye catching. Tureen: I can see a crack from the top through one of the orange poppies. This is visible in the main photo if you look very very closely at the orange poppy on the front of the tureen. This makes me think this should NOT be used for soup or liquids. This is a display piece only if you want to preserve the awesome aspect of it. There is a larger chip just above one of the green handles, and some chips on the underside of that handle. I took some photos of the flaws with the piece upside down so you could see areas on the underside of the flowers that are damaged. The only damage that is easy to spot ( by a casual observer) with the lid on is that chip above the handle. Everything else is small and disguised by the riot of colors and textures.
