There are 2 air intake switches on the body of the dummy which have several positions – “open”, “closed” and “pressurizing”. These positions simulate various modes of operation of the gas composition supply system of the early Soviet orbiter Soyuz and space station Salyut. This item has been taken from garage of the former participant of the program. He worked at Baikonur launch pad in 1960-1980-s and collected many interesting devices as space memorabilia but his relatives are not aware about the purpose of certain devices he collected. Soviet engineers decided to create an earth-like atmosphere inside the spacecraft. In terms of comfort, this is the best solution. But if the spacecraft loses its tightness, the emergency spacesuits must be pressurized to atmospheric pressure. With zero pressure inside the spacecraft, such pressurization of spacesuits deprives them of flexibility, which greatly interferes with the movements of the cosmonauts, not allowing them to bend their arms and legs. The solution is to reduce the pressure in the spacesuits and switch to breathing pure oxygen, which is technically not easy. That’s why the gas composytion supply system has “pressurizing” mode.
