The disc covers basically whole curriculum of Shang Style Xingyiquan – Five Elements Fists, Linked Form, Eight Postures of Arhat (Luohan), Eight Postures of Vajra (Jingang), Xingyi Six Harmonies Fist, Entering and Exiting the Cave, Mixed Strikes, Twelve Great Hammers, Twelve (Animal) Shapes, as well as weapon routines (weapons routines are demonstrated by Dai Mingwei, Mr Cui’s disciple) Lecturer: Cui Guogui Format: VCD Language Speaking: Chinese Grandmaster Shang Yunxiang Shang Yunxiang (1864-1937), from Hebei province. He was the founder of Shang Style Xing Yi, people gave him a nickname as “Iron Foot Buddha” since his stepping skill was his specialty. Originally his physical body condition was not great but he practiced hard, eventually he became one of the best Xing Yi master in history. He worked with his father in Beijing, during the day time, he worked in a stirrup shop. In the evening, he practiced Gongli style with Ma Tianyi. It lasted about 10 years. His martial art skill was very good already. However, when he fought with Geng Jishan, the famous Xing Yi master, he lost. He did not get discouraged after the fight, he visited many master after that, he used about 3 years to do it. Finally he met Li Cunyi in Tianjin, the legendary Xing Yi figure back to that time. In the beginning, Li Cunyi refused him since he was short and slim. In old time, there were certain rule of choosing students: if the students were not strong enough, the master would not accept them, since they worried that their bad performance in martial art would ruin the reputation of their style and school. But Shang Yuxiang asked Zhou Mingtai, who was a good friend of Li Cunyi to take him. Li got convinced by Zhou but just let Shang worked in his martial art school for daily job, such as cleaning the floor and delivery mails . At the same time, he practiced with other students of Li Cunyi with extraordinary effort. After years, he became very strong and got the attention from Li Cunyi, Li later took him as one of his disciples and taught him the real practice of Xing Yi. At the same time, he got instruction from Guo Yunshen as well, Guo taught him three of his specialties: Xing Yi long pole, half-step Beng Quan and Fight with Dantian. He became famous from one challenge. There was a famous master who was good at kicking, it was said that he could kick a wall to fall. However, he could not move Shang Yunxiang a inch with his powerful kicking, when Shang just kept the Santi Posture. From this event, he became famous in martial art community. In Tianjin, Li Cunyi made a public challenge: anyone could fight with their school in public, people call it Lei Tai. Li Cunyi asked Shang Yunxiang as the host of the Leitai, it lasted about 100 days, but there was no one could win Shang Yunxiang. So from that time, Shang Yuxiang became famous in Tianjin. He was very righteous. There was a bandit in Tongzhou, he was good at martial art and government could not arrest him, he did many bad things to innocent civilians. Shang Yuxiang went to there to arrest him and send him to government. So people created two opera show at that time to appreciate Shang’s help. When Japan invaded China, Shang helped Chinese army too. He trained soldiers Five-Element Saber for battle. That army became famous for their saber in battle.
